Some of you may have known/known of Richard Baines. He is a sad loss and this is the tribute from Facebook:
At the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh we are devastated by the loss of our friend and colleague Richard Baines, who passed away on Sunday 25 October during Storm Boelo.
In Richard, the world has lost a horticultural giant and global champion for plants and saving species from extinction.
As our incredible curator at our Logan Botanic Garden in Dumfries and Galloway for 20 years, Richard led on expanding the Garden's Living Collection through fieldwork across the globe, from which 7 plant species are currently being published that are new to science. He was also committed to nurturing the next generation of horticulturists through his work in schools to provide horticultural apprentice opportunities at Logan.
Richard's contribution to Logan Botanic Garden, and to the wider work and culture at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, has been immeasurable. Our thoughts are with Richard's family, friends, colleagues, and all who knew him.
